Peruvaram Sree Mahadeva Temple – Temples in Kerala
Peruvaram Mahadeva Temple is a Shiva temple located in North Paravur in Ernakulam district. In this ancient temple, Lord Parameswaran is enshrined in a single sanctum, facing east, and Goddess Parvati is enshrined in the temple. The sanctum is circular in shape. The sub-deities are Ganapati in the inner sanctum, Yakshi in the outer sanctum, Palachuvatt in the northern side, Dharmasasta and Naga gods in the southern side. The only special feature of this temple is that Sahasrakumbhabhishekam is performed on Lord Mahadeva every day except during festivals.
On most days, offerings like Ksheeradhara and Kalabham are also made. There is a pond on the east and west sides of the temple. The temple is under the Travancore Devaswom Board.
The Tantric rights of the temple are towards Vezhaparambu Manakkal. The Melshanthi is Niraka Shanthi. The Karayama Kazhagam is between Cheruvalliyakulangara Varyam and Vayalil Veedu. Vezhaparambu Manakkal is located at a place called Manakkapady on the Aluva-Paravur state highway. The Melshanthi’s monastery is located to the west, Vayalil Veedu to the north and Cheruvalliyakulangara Varyam is located 250 meters to the southwest.
The Temple is blessed with several sacred festivals that are celebrated with deep devotion and divine grandeur. Among them, the most significant are:
Annual Festival
The Peruvaram Mahadeva Temple observes its annual ten-day festival with great reverence and joy. The festivities commence with the auspicious flag hoisting ceremony (Kodiyettam), symbolizing the divine invitation to Lord Mahadeva and the celestial beings. Each day is filled with sacred rituals, devotional offerings, and cultural programs that uplift the spiritual atmosphere.
The ninth day of the festival holds special sanctity, marked by a magnificent procession in which nine caparisoned elephants carry the divine presence of Lord Mahadeva around the temple premises. The air resonates with the rhythmic beats of Panchavadyam, filling every devotee’s heart with spiritual ecstasy and devotion. The evenings come alive with classical art forms such as Kathakali, Ottanthullal, Chakyarkoothu, and Kurathiyattom, all offered in humble devotion to the Lord, celebrating Kerala’s divine cultural heritage.
Bhagavatha Sapthaha Yajnyam
The Bhagavatha Sapthaha Yajnyam is one of the most sacred observances of the temple. This seven-day spiritual discourse is dedicated to the recitation of the Srimad Bhagavata Purana, invoking the divine presence of Lord Vishnu and spreading the message of righteousness, devotion, and dharma. The yajnyam draws countless devotees who gather with folded hands and pure hearts to listen, pray, and seek spiritual enlightenment.
This holy event not only deepens the faith of devotees but also nurtures a sense of peace, unity, and divine grace within the community. Through every chant, offering, and act of devotion, the festival reflects the temple’s eternal mission — to lead every soul closer to God through faith, devotion, and selfless service.
